Hmm… A third princess diaries The movie is coming out after a nearly 20-year hiatus, and everyone is *totally* freaking out right now.
The original 2001 film starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews, based on the novel by Meg Cabot, tells the story of a teenage girl named Mia Thermopolis who lives in San Francisco with her mother. Mia learns that she’s not just a geek trying to ace high school, but rather the heir to the Genovese throne. During the movie, she has to decide if she wants to live a royal life in the spotlight (and attends lots of fun royal events in the process). Spoiler alert: she says “yes” to princess life.
A very young Chris Pine joined the cast for the film’s sequel in 2004, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which follows Princess Mia after graduating from Princeton University as she searches for true love (she must be married within 30 days if she wants to be crowned queen). As the film ends with Mia convincing parliament that no, she doesn’t need a man to run the country, Mia and Lord Nicholas Devereaux (aka Chris Pine), are definitely madly in love, which leaves the possibility of a fairly open third film. .
And while people were pining (pun intended) over the possibility of a third film for years, it seems good things are coming to those who wait. As of November 15, sources confirmed The Hollywood Reporter that a third film is coming, and it will be an all-new sequel to the series, rather than a reboot.
Ahead, read everything you need to know about The Princess Diaries 3 so far.
Who will work on The Princess Diaries 3?
The screenplay will be written by Aadrita Mukerji, who has writing credits on super girl, Reachand Scorpioand extra credit on episodes of new girl. Just in case you forgot, the iconic first and second films were written by Gina Wendkos and Shonda Rhimes, respectively.
While the late filmmaker Garry Marshall directed the first two films, it’s unclear who will direct the third. But it will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who also produced the first two films (with Whitney Houston herself!) and will be produced by Melissa Stack, who scripted The other woman and Godmother, according The Hollywood Reporter.
Who will be casting for The Princess Diaries 3?
Since the film still appears to be in its *very* early stages, casting has not been confirmed. Anne Hathaway has not (yet!) agreed to return, The Hollywood Reporter said, but just last month she said she would be backing a third film.
“I would do more than entertain him, I shoot for it,” she said entertainment tonight. “If there’s a way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we’d make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen. For my part, I cry inside.
It’s unclear if Julie Andrews will choose to reprise her role as Queen Clarisse at this time. “I think it would be too late to do that now,” she said. The Hollywood Reporter June 8. “It’s too far now to go back. It’s a nice thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.
But then, on June 9, she said entertainment tonight that she does not yet know if she will return. “It depends on the story, and if they can come up with something that would be wonderful, but if not, there will be other things,” she said.
What about the plot?
Again, no word on the plot yet, but if I know anything about Genovia it’s that there’s always some fabulous drama and plenty of sweet love stories to tell. And of course, it’s bound to err on the comedic side like its predecessors.
When The Princess Diaries 3 to be freed?
Since the news of the third film has only just been announced, it is too early to know and there is no confirmation as to the release date of the film yet. But for now, I’ll leave you with it this:
How much money do movies make?
Princess Diary 1 grossed $163.5 million worldwide, while the The Princess Diaries 2 grossed $134.7 million, per The Hollywood Reporter. Obviously, we don’t yet know how much the third one will make, but based on the Julie Andrews/Anne Hathaway fan clubs, I’m guessing it will do just as well as the first two.
I can’t wait to see the Princess of Genovia on screen again. Congratulations for Mia!
